A webinar titled “Power Markets Unplugged: How Electricity is Priced, Traded, and Optimized” was organized by the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) Student Branch Chapter of the University of Moratuwa via Zoom , aiming to provide students with insights into the functioning of modern electricity markets. The session was conducted by Dr. Mohasha Sampath , Scientist at the Institute of High Performance Computing . The discussion covered key aspects of the e lectricity sector value chain, operational priorities of power systems, and the breakdown of electricity pricing, along with important concepts such as capacity markets, energy markets, market clearing, and the role of balancing markets. Real-world perspectives including Australia ’s energy landscape and the National Electricity Market of Singapore (NEMS) were also highlighted, while emphasizing the growing role of optimization and AI in energy market clearing and the evolution of electricity markets . The session concluded with an engaging Q&A discussion, making it both informative and interactive for participants.
