Overview: On April 24, 2026, the IEEE Student Branch of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura hosted its flagship annual cultural celebration, “Awurudu with IEEE 2026” , for the 3rd consecutive time at the University Grounds . The event served as a major community-building initiative, bringing together a record-breaking participation of over 350 individuals , including IEEE members, university students, and faculty staff. The celebration was designed to foster camaraderie and provide a platform for students to engage in traditional Sri Lankan customs within a professional volunteer framework. Event Highlights & Activities: The day was filled with a diverse array of traditional and competitive games designed to encourage teamwork and analytical thinking. Key highlights included: Traditional Athletics: High-energy competitions such as Kaba Adima (Tug-of-War) , Kotta Pora (Pillow Fight) , and the Sack Race . Skill & Precision Games: Activities such as Aliyata Aha Thabima (Marking the Elephant's Eye) and Balancing the Lime on a Spoon , which required focus and coordination. Cultural Pageant: The highly anticipated selection of the Awurudu Kumara and Kumariya (New Year Prince and Princess) , showcasing the cultural attire and spirit of the participants. Traditional Refreshments: A dedicated Awurudu Kavili table , providing attendees with a taste of traditional New Year delicacies, fostering a sense of shared heritage. Impact and Outcome: With a participation count exceeding 350 , the event significantly boosted member retention and branch visibility across the university campus.
