Description
The IEEE PES Day 2026 Digital Awareness Campaign was conducted from April 20 to April 26, 2026, under the theme “Grid to Green.” The primary objective of the campaign was to educate undergraduate students and the wider community on the transition from conventional fossil-fuel-based power systems to sustainable and intelligent energy solutions, in alignment with the mission of the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES). The campaign was structured as a series of informative and technically focused digital posts disseminated Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and LinkedIn platforms. The content covered key thematic areas including renewable energy integration, smart grid technologies, energy storage solutions, and sustainable urban infrastructure. Several real-world case studies were highlighted to enhance practical understanding, including the Siyambalanduwa “Rividanavi” Solar Project, advancements in piezoelectric energy harvesting technologies, and Sri Lanka’s national goal of achieving 70% renewable energy by 2030. Additionally, emerging concepts such as smart cities, energy-efficient infrastructure, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and virtual power plants were introduced to broaden students’ exposure to modern energy innovations. The campaign also emphasized Sri Lanka’s “Sunshine Revolution,” showcasing the country’s solar energy potential and ongoing developments in solar power generation, including floating solar technologies. Furthermore, technical insights were provided on the environmental limitations of coal-based power generation and the necessity of transitioning towards cleaner energy alternatives. All technical content and captions were reviewed and verified by the Chapter Advisor, Dr. Charithri Yapa, ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and quality of the information disseminated. The campaign successfully engaged a wide audience of undergraduate students from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and other universities, generating active interaction through likes, shares, comments, and discussions across multiple platforms. Outcome: As a result of this initiative, participants developed a deeper understanding of sustainable energy systems, modern power infrastructure, and the role of emerging technologies in addressing global energy challenges. The campaign also enhanced awareness of IEEE PES activities and encouraged students to actively engage in technical and professional development opportunities within the energy sector.
