June 22, 2026 at 12:30 PM - June 25, 2026 at 3:30 PM @ Online event
Description
RICERCA 3.0 was the third edition of the undergraduate research awareness session series organized by the IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Student Branch Affinity Group of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU). Building upon the success of its previous editions, the initiative was designed to cultivate a strong research culture among undergraduate students by equipping them with fundamental research knowledge, exposing them to emerging technological domains, and encouraging innovation through expert-led learning experiences. Conducted entirely in a virtual format, the program brought together distinguished academics and industry professionals to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world research while inspiring students from diverse engineering and computing disciplines to embark on their own research journeys. The program was conducted over three days from 22nd to 25th June 2026 through Google Meet, with each day focusing on a specific aspect of research and technological innovation. The first day featured a common session titled "The Complete Research Paper Blueprint & Workflow," delivered by Professor Bimali Indrarathne , an experienced academic and researcher. During this comprehensive session, participants were guided through every stage of the research process, including identifying research problems, conducting literature reviews, developing research objectives, selecting suitable methodologies, analysing findings, structuring research papers, applying proper referencing techniques, and understanding research ethics. The session provided students with a solid foundation in academic research while helping them gain confidence in preparing research publications and avoiding common research pitfalls. The second day was dedicated to Computing Research Sessions , where participants explored several rapidly evolving technology domains. Mr. Miyuru Sanjana , Senior Software Engineer, conducted the first session on Data and Intelligent Computing , introducing participants to Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Natural Language Processing (NLP), Deep Learning, Big Data, and Data Analytics while demonstrating their practical applications in solving real-world challenges. This was followed by Dr. Dilrukshi Gamage , Senior Lecturer at the University of Colombo School of Computing and Microsoft Research Fellow, who delivered an engaging session on Smart Systems and Interactive Technologies , covering the Internet of Things (IoT), Visual Computing, Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), User Experience (UX), User Interface (UI), and Human–Computer Interaction (HCI). The final session of the day was presented by Mr. Thilina Samarasinghe , who discussed Emerging Technologies , highlighting Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, Blockchain technologies, secure digital infrastructures, and the increasing importance of technological innovation in today's digital landscape. Interactive question-and-answer sessions after each presentation encouraged participants to engage directly with the speakers and deepen their understanding of these research domains. The final day focused on Engineering Research Sessions , providing students with valuable insights into modern engineering research and sustainable innovation. Ms. Senali Withanachchi , Visiting Lecturer, Consultant, and Doctoral Researcher in Environmental Engineering, delivered an inspiring session on Emerging Paradigms in Sustainable Engineering and Green Technologies , exploring topics such as Renewable Energy, Smart Infrastructure, Green Technologies, Electric Vehicles, and Industrial Innovation while emphasizing environmentally sustainable engineering solutions. The second session was conducted by Mr. Miran Dabare , Senior Automation Engineer, who presented Research Trends in Industrial Automation and Smart Manufacturing , introducing participants to Robotics, Automation, Embedded Systems, Mechatronics, Control Systems, and Industry 4.0 technologies. The day concluded with interactive discussions, appreciation of speakers, and the official closing ceremony, marking the successful completion of the three-day research awareness initiative. RICERCA 3.0 served as a comprehensive platform for knowledge sharing, networking, and research inspiration. Beyond introducing students to contemporary research fields, the initiative strengthened collaboration between academia and industry while encouraging critical thinking, innovation, and interdisciplinary learning. Through expert guidance, interactive discussions, and exposure to emerging technologies across both computing and engineering disciplines, participants gained valuable insights into current research trends and future career opportunities. The event attracted over 100 participants , including IEEE members and external attendees, and generated strong engagement through extensive social media outreach and interactive activities throughout the program. With overwhelmingly positive participation and feedback, RICERCA 3.0 successfully reinforced the IEEE WIE Student Branch Affinity Group's commitment to nurturing a sustainable research culture at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University while motivating undergraduate students to become future researchers, innovators, and technology leaders.
