The third session of the NETX IoT Workshop Series , titled “BT/BLE Projects” , was conducted on 14th May from 16:30 to 18:00 at L221A, Faculty of Engineering, University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) . The session was conducted by Mr. Asiri and Mr. Harsha, members of the IEEE ComSoc Student Branch and Undergraduate students of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Sri Jayewardenepura . Objectives of the Session Introduce participants to the fundamentals of Bluetooth technology and its evolution over time. Provide an understanding of Bluetooth communication standards, frequency characteristics, and modulation techniques. Familiarize participants with the differences between Classic Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technologies. Explain the applications of Bluetooth-based communication in IoT and embedded systems. Provide practical experience in establishing wireless communication between hardware devices using Bluetooth. Develop participants’ understanding of device communication models, including master-slave communication architecture. Learning Outcomes By the end of the session, participants were able to: Understand the history, development, and evolution of Bluetooth technology. Identify the operating frequency range and technical characteristics of Bluetooth communication. Understand frequency modulation and frequency hopping techniques used in Bluetooth systems. Differentiate between Classic Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technologies. Understand Bluetooth power classes and their relationship with transmission range and power consumption. Establish communication between hardware devices using Bluetooth technology. Understand the concept of master-slave communication in wireless communication systems. Gain practical exposure to implementing simple Bluetooth-based IoT applications. Technical Topics Covered Introduction to Bluetooth Technology Overview of Bluetooth history and development. Evolution of Bluetooth technology and its role in modern wireless communication. Operating frequency range of Bluetooth: 2.4 GHz – 2.4835 GHz Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) frequency band. Introduction to frequency modulation techniques used in Bluetooth communication. Frequency hopping technology and its importance in reducing interference and improving communication reliability. Bluetooth Power Classes Introduction to Bluetooth transmission power classifications: Class 1: High power transmission. 100 mW power output. Approximately 100 m communication range. Class 2: Standard power transmission. 2.5 mW power output. Approximately 10 m communication range. Class 3: Low power transmission. 1 mW power output. Approximately 1 m communication range. Classic Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Introduction to Classic Bluetooth communication. Overview of Bluetooth Low Energy technology. Comparison between Classic Bluetooth and BLE based on power consumption, communication range, and application areas. Applications of Bluetooth and BLE technologies in IoT and embedded systems. Practical Activities: Bluetooth-Based Communication Projects Simple Task 01: Application and Hardware Communication Establishing communication between an application and hardware device using Bluetooth. Understanding wireless data exchange between software and embedded hardware. Implementing a basic Bluetooth communication setup. Simple Task 02: Master-Slave Communication Introduction to master and slave communication architecture. Configuring Bluetooth devices for communication between multiple hardware components. Understanding the role of controlling and responding devices in wireless networks. Homework Activity Further exploration of Bluetooth-based communication and implementation concepts. Applying the knowledge gained from the session to develop simple Bluetooth-enabled IoT applications. Overall, the BT/BLE Projects Workshop Session provided participants with fundamental knowledge of Bluetooth communication technologies and their applications in IoT systems. Through theoretical discussions and practical activities, participants gained an understanding of wireless communication principles, Bluetooth device interaction, and the implementation of simple Bluetooth-based embedded applications.
