The IEEE Computer Society Student Branch Chapter of Sri Lanka Technology Campus (SLTC) successfully organized GitGenius 2026, a hands-on GitHub workshop, on 4th July 2026 at the SLTC premises, Padukka. The workshop was organized to provide undergraduates and technology enthusiasts with practical knowledge of Git, GitHub, version control systems, and collaborative software development practices. With the growing demand for software developers who are proficient in industry-standard development tools, GitGenius 2026 served as a platform to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional software engineering. The event brought together participants from various universities and technology communities, creating an engaging environment for learning, collaboration, and networking. The program commenced with the traditional lighting of the oil lamp, followed by the welcome address delivered by Mr. Eshan Menuka, Co-Chairperson of GitGenius 2026. The event was further honored by the presence of the distinguished guest, Dr. Chameera De Silva, who delivered the keynote speech. During his address, he emphasized the importance of continuously developing technical skills, embracing collaborative software development practices, and utilizing platforms such as GitHub to build professional portfolios and prepare for successful careers in the software industry. The workshop featured three technical sessions conducted by experienced industry professionals. Mr. Dineth Siriwardana conducted the session "Beyond Code: Getting Started with GitHub," introducing participants to Git, version control concepts, repository management, branching strategies, commits, and pull requests through practical demonstrations and hands-on activities. Mr. Nisal Gunawardhana delivered the session "Build, Test, Deploy: Mastering GitHub Actions," where participants learned the fundamentals of Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) using GitHub Actions and explored workflow automation techniques widely used in modern software engineering. The final session, "From GitHub to Azure: Modern DevOps Workflow," was conducted by Mr. Kavindu Umayanga, providing participants with insights into DevOps practices, GitHub integration with Microsoft Azure, deployment automation, and cloud-based software development workflows. Throughout the workshop, participants actively engaged with the speakers by asking questions, participating in discussions, and completing practical exercises. The combination of theoretical knowledge and real-world demonstrations enabled attendees to gain a comprehensive understanding of modern collaborative software development practices while building confidence in using GitHub and related technologies for academic and professional projects. The event concluded with the Vote of Thanks delivered by Ms. Omaya Nayagara, Project Secretary of GitGenius 2026, who expressed sincere appreciation to the distinguished guest, guest speakers, advisory panel, the Executive Committees of the IEEE Student Branch of SLTC and the IEEE Computer Society Student Branch Chapter of SLTC, sponsors, partners, volunteers, organizing committee members, the SLTC Media Unit, the IT Unit, and all participants for their valuable support in making the event a success. Tokens of appreciation were presented to the guest speakers, followed by a group photograph to commemorate the successful completion of the workshop. Overall, GitGenius 2026 successfully achieved its objectives by enhancing participants' knowledge of Git, GitHub, workflow automation, and modern DevOps practices while promoting collaboration, professional networking, and industry readiness. The positive feedback received from participants reaffirmed the importance of organizing practical, industry-oriented learning experiences. GitGenius 2026 stands as another successful initiative by the IEEE Computer Society Student Branch Chapter of SLTC in its ongoing commitment to empowering future technology professionals through innovation, collaboration, and practical learning.
