Pathways to Entrepreneurship – Session 1: Is Entrepreneurship All About Money?

The IEEE Student Branch, K. S. School of Engineering and Management, India, and the IEEE Student Branch, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka , organized Session 01 of the “ Pathways to Entrepreneurship ” Webinar Series under the IEEE Region 10 ACEI Entrepreneurship Ambassador Program 2026 on 29 July 2026 . Titled “ Is Entrepreneurship All About Money? ”, the session aimed to introduce students to the broader dimensions of entrepreneurship and encourage an entrepreneurial mindset centered on innovation, problem-solving, adaptability, communication, networking, and meaningful value creation. The programme was conducted in a hybrid format, with the webinar hosted through Zoom and simultaneously screened via a projector for participants attending physically. The event attracted 342 participants, comprising 300 online and 42 physical participants, with representation from more than 15 colleges across India and Sri Lanka . The strong participation demonstrated significant interest among students in entrepreneurship, innovation, startups, emerging technologies, and professional development. The resource person for the inaugural session was Eng. Tharindu Suraj, CEO of SRQ Robotics LLC and Co-Founder of QubeBots . Drawing from his entrepreneurial journey and industry experience, he shared practical insights, real-world examples, and lessons on navigating challenges and identifying opportunities. The session began by examining the question, “Is Entrepreneurship All About Money?” Eng. Tharindu explained that entrepreneurship extends beyond financial returns and involves identifying meaningful problems, developing innovative solutions, understanding people's needs, creating value, and transforming challenges into opportunities. He emphasized the importance of persistence, adaptability, continuous learning, and taking initiative when pursuing entrepreneurial goals. A key focus was innovation and problem-solving. Participants were encouraged to observe real-world challenges, understand problems thoroughly, and develop practical solutions using available resources. The speaker also highlighted the importance of communication, presentation, interpersonal, and networking skills, emphasizing that these abilities complement technical knowledge and play a vital role in entrepreneurship and professional development. The discussion also touched upon hobbies, passion, and personal interests as potential sources of creativity and innovation. The session further explored Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies, focusing on their potential to transform businesses, improve productivity, create new opportunities, and influence the future of entrepreneurship. Participants were encouraged to understand these technologies and explore ways to use them effectively in developing innovative solutions. The keynote session was followed by an interactive Question and Answer session, during which participants raised questions on startup failures, persistence, investment, networking, profitability, motivation, Artificial Intelligence, automation, and professional development. Discussions explored why businesses may fail despite addressing genuine problems, the qualities investors look for in founders, strategies for maintaining persistence during setbacks, and approaches to building professional networks from scratch. Participants also discussed common networking challenges and ways students can create value when connecting with experienced professionals and entrepreneurs. Overall, the session provided students with practical perspectives on entrepreneurship and encouraged them to move beyond viewing it solely as a means of financial gain, emphasizing value creation, innovation, problem-solving, effective communication, networking, adaptability, and continuous learning as essential elements of an entrepreneurial and professional journey. The session received an encouraging response, achieving an overall rating of 4.6/5 . As the first session of the “Pathways to Entrepreneurship” Webinar Series, the programme established a strong foundation for subsequent sessions under the IEEE Region 10 ACEI Entrepreneurship Ambassador Program 2026. It encouraged participants to identify real-world problems, explore innovative solutions, develop essential professional skills, embrace emerging technologies, and pursue entrepreneurship as a pathway to meaningful value creation and impact.
