Every impactful innovation begins with identifying the right problem. As the first workshop in the IEEE Curtin ASPIRE 2026 learning series, this session introduced participants to the principles of user empathy and challenge definition—two fundamental pillars of design thinking and innovation. Mr. Aloka Gunasekara guided participants through practical approaches to understanding users, identifying genuine pain points, and framing problem statements that lead to meaningful and sustainable solutions. Drawing from his experience in entrepreneurship and venture building, he emphasized the importance of validating assumptions, engaging with stakeholders, and developing a deep understanding of user needs before proposing solutions. The workshop equipped participants with the mindset and tools necessary to begin their innovation journey and prepared them for the Week 1 deliverables of the IEEE Curtin ASPIRE 2026 competition, including the Problem Statement and Lean Canvas.
