DetectX Phase 2 – AI & Computer Vision Workshop

May 16, 2026 · 4:30 AM - 10:00 AM @ Colombo, Curtin University Colombo

Description

DetectX Phase 2 marked the flagship technical component of the DetectX initiative through a major industry-academia collaboration with Virtusa , delivering an immersive, hands-on Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision workshop alongside the DetectX Challenge mini-hackathon. Designed to expose participants to enterprise-grade AI development practices, the workshop provided an end-to-end walkthrough of modern computer vision pipelines used in industry. Led by AI professionals from Virtusa, students gained practical experience in real-world computer vision workflows, including live dataset collection using webcams, image annotation, transfer learning, model optimization, and deployment. Participants worked on an authentic industrial business case involving Automated Quality Control for an Electronics Manufacturing Client , where they developed AI-powered solutions capable of detecting defects such as scratches, component misalignments, and missing components on printed circuit boards. The session leveraged Visual Studio Code together with GitHub Copilot's agentic capabilities , demonstrating how modern AI-assisted development environments can significantly accelerate the engineering workflow while maintaining sound problem-solving principles. The workshop concluded with the DetectX Challenge , where teams applied the concepts learned throughout the day to solve practical computer vision tasks under the mentorship of Virtusa engineers. The event successfully bridged the gap between classroom learning and industrial practice, providing students with invaluable exposure to enterprise AI workflows while highlighting the importance of collaboration between academia and industry in preparing future AI engineers.
