ASCEND - Session 1

Description

ASCEND is a flagship industry engagement initiative organized by the IEEE Women in Engineering Affinity Group of the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT), created to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry expectations. Through a series of monthly technical sessions led by experienced professionals, ASCEND aims to equip undergraduate students with practical knowledge, exposure to emerging technologies, and insights into the skills and career pathways shaping the modern technology industry. By connecting students directly with industry experts, the initiative fosters continuous learning, professional development, and industry readiness beyond the classroom. The inaugural ASCEND session featured "Building CI/CD Pipelines with GitHub Actions: How Modern Companies Automate Software Deployment," conducted by Mr.Miran Kurukulasuriya and Mr.Uvindu Sri Dharmawardana from WSO2 . The session introduced participants to the principles of Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD), highlighting how automation has transformed modern software development and delivery practices. Students were guided through the complete lifecycle of a modern deployment workflow, beginning with code commits and pull requests, followed by automated testing, build processes, deployment pipelines, and production environments. Through a practical demonstration using GitHub Actions, Mr. Miran showcased how development teams automate repetitive tasks to improve efficiency, reliability, and software quality. In addition to the technical content, the session provided valuable insights into career opportunities in the DevOps ecosystem, including roles such as DevOps Engineer, Cloud Engineer, Platform Engineer, and Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) . Participants also received guidance on essential technical skills, industry expectations, learning resources, and project ideas to help them begin their journey in DevOps. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, where students actively engaged with the speaker by discussing technical concepts, career pathways, and industry experiences. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants reflected the session's success in delivering practical knowledge and strengthening students' understanding of real-world software engineering practices. As the opening session of ASCEND, the workshop established a strong foundation for the series by successfully connecting classroom concepts with industry applications and inspiring students to explore emerging technologies with confidence.
