The first session of the NETX IoT Workshop Series , titled “Arduino Basics” , was conducted on 29th April 2026 by Mr. Hiran Dharmapala . This introductory session focused on providing participants with fundamental knowledge of Arduino programming, embedded systems, and microcontroller-based development . The workshop served as the foundation for the subsequent IoT-focused sessions by introducing participants to the basic concepts of hardware interfacing, programming logic, and embedded system design. Through this session, participants were introduced to the essential concepts required to develop simple microcontroller-based applications and understand the role of embedded systems in IoT solutions. Objectives of the Session Introduce participants to the fundamentals of Arduino development and embedded systems. Provide an understanding of microcontroller-based system design and its applications. Familiarize participants with the Arduino development environment and programming concepts. Introduce basic electronic components and their interfacing with Arduino boards. Develop foundational knowledge required for subsequent IoT-based hardware development activities. Learning Outcomes By the end of the session, participants were able to: Understand the role of microcontrollers in embedded systems and IoT applications. Identify the basic components, features, and functionalities of an Arduino development board. Understand the Arduino programming environment and basic program structure. Develop simple Arduino programs for controlling electronic components. Understand digital input and output operations in microcontroller-based systems. Gain basic experience in hardware interfacing and circuit implementation. Establish the necessary foundation for developing advanced IoT applications in future workshops. Technical Topics Covered Introduction to Embedded Systems Overview of embedded systems and their applications in modern technologies. Role of microcontrollers in automation, control systems, and IoT applications. Introduction to hardware and software interaction within embedded systems. Introduction to Arduino Platform Overview of Arduino development boards. Features and applications of Arduino in rapid prototyping and embedded system development. Introduction to Arduino Integrated Development Environment (IDE). Arduino Programming Fundamentals Basic structure of an Arduino program. Understanding the setup() and loop() functions. Introduction to programming logic for controlling hardware components. Digital input and output operations. Basic Hardware Interfacing Introduction to interfacing electronic components with Arduino. Understanding GPIO pins and their applications. Basic circuit connections and testing methods. Overall, the Arduino Basics Workshop Session provided participants with a strong foundation in embedded system development and microcontroller programming. The session enabled participants to understand the fundamentals of Arduino-based hardware control and prepared them for advanced IoT concepts covered in subsequent workshops, including ESP32 development, sensor integration, wireless communication, and IoT application development.
