Pathways to Entrepreneurship – Session 2: “IGNITE: Sparking the Entrepreneur Within”

The IEEE Student Branch, K. S. School of Engineering and Management, India , and the IEEE Student Branch, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka , organized Session 02 of the “ Pathways to Entrepreneurship ” Webinar Series under the IEEE Region 10 ACEI Entrepreneurship Ambassador Program 2026 on 4 August 2026 . Titled “ IGNITE: Sparking the Entrepreneur Within ,” the international webinar aimed to strengthen students’ understanding of innovation, entrepreneurship, product development, and the journey from technological ideas to practical and commercially viable solutions. The session was conducted through Webex, with participation from 332 participants, including 288 online and 44 in-person participants. Students from 15+ colleges across India and Sri Lanka participated in the programme, demonstrating strong interest in innovation, entrepreneurship, emerging technologies, and professional development. The session featured Dr. K. R. Suresh Nair , Founder & Managing Director of Amara Raja Design Alpha Pvt. Ltd., Chair of IEEE Region 10 ACEI , Vice President – Programs, IEEE Entrepreneurship, and Member of the Board of Governors of IEEE TEMS. With extensive experience in technology, innovation, entrepreneurship, and IEEE leadership, Dr. Suresh Nair provided participants with practical insights into transforming technological innovations into meaningful products, services, and entrepreneurial opportunities. The keynote session focused on transforming ideas and inventions into products or services that address genuine customer needs. The speaker emphasized that innovation involves more than creating something new; it requires understanding users, validating market needs, developing relevant solutions, and creating meaningful value. Participants were introduced to the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) framework, which explains the progression of technology from basic concepts to practical application and market readiness. The session also addressed startup challenges and team building, highlighting common causes of failure such as limited market demand, inadequate funding, and unsuitable team composition. The importance of building teams with complementary technical, financial, communication, and business skills was emphasized. Through Design Thinking, participants learned how empathy, problem definition, ideation, prototyping, and testing can support effective product development. Another key focus was the journey from prototype to commercialization, covering detailed design, alpha and beta prototypes, pilot production, compliance, reliability, and manufacturability. The speaker also discussed product costing, including components, transportation, assembly, testing, packaging, and R&D expenses. Participants gained practical insights into customer validation, technology maturity, market analysis, team building, product development, commercialization, and the importance of determination, perseverance, adaptability, and an entrepreneurial mindset. The event successfully connected technology, innovation, entrepreneurship, and commercialization, encouraging students to consider how their technical knowledge, research, and ideas can be transformed into practical and market-oriented solutions. The session received an overall rating of 4.6/5, reflecting the positive response from participants. Overall, Session 02 provided participants with a practical understanding of the innovation-to-commercialization journey. The insights shared by Dr. K. R. Suresh Nair encouraged students to consider customer needs, market validation, product development, team building, reliability, compliance, cost, and commercialization when developing technological solutions. The programme successfully advanced the objectives of the “Pathways to Entrepreneurship” Webinar Series by empowering students to transform ideas and technological innovations into meaningful, sustainable, and market-oriented solutions while promoting international collaboration within the IEEE community.
