A workshop titled “PhysicAI 1.0 – AI in Power and Energy Systems” was organized by the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) Student Branch Chapter of the University of Moratuwa in collaboration with the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Student Branch Chapter of the University of Moratuwa , providing participants with an overview of the applications of Artificial Intelligence in modern power and energy systems. The session was conducted by Dr. V. Logeeshan , Senior Lecturer, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa. The discussion introduced Physical AI and explored how renewable energy integration, increased sensing, and AI are transforming conventional power systems. Key practical applications including predictive maintenance, non-intrusive load monitoring, forecasting and optimal scheduling, microgrids, power system fault analysis, cyber-attack detection, battery health estimation, and power quality disturbance analysis were discussed. Real-world applications were also highlighted, including the use of AI to predict generator faults at the Kelanitissa Power Plant and the application of AI-based techniques to identify power system faults and cyber threats. The session concluded by exploring current AI trends, including Large Language Models (LLMs), Vision Language Models (VLMs), and Vision Language Action (VLA) models , with an example of OpenVLA implemented on a robotic arm . The workshop provided participants with valuable insights into the growing role of AI in developing smarter, more reliable, and adaptive power and energy systems.
