Gammaddata IEEE API 5.0 – Session 01: Python Programming

Description

The first workshop of the Gammaddata IEEE API 5.0 program, titled “Session 01: Python Programming,” was conducted virtually via Zoom on 11th September 2026 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with the participation of 125 attendees. The session was organized collaboratively by the IEEE PES, IEEE RAS, and IEEE IAS Student Branch Chapters of the University of Moratuwa and was conducted by Dilansa Thimandee. The session introduced school students to the fundamentals of Python programming under the theme “Code > Calculate > Create.” Basic programming concepts were explained in an accessible manner, followed by practical demonstrations using Turtle Graphics and Python-based calculations. Through hands-on examples, participants explored how programming instructions could be transformed into visual outputs and how Python could be used to solve calculation-based problems. The activities helped participants develop introductory logical and computational thinking skills while gaining practical exposure to programming. The workshop also included an interactive Q&A session, followed by a token of appreciation to the speaker and a vote of thanks. Overall, the session provided participants with a practical introduction to Python programming and encouraged them to continue exploring the field of computing.
