AeroXplore: RC Plane Workshop
July 4, 2026 · 3:00 AM - 11:30 AM @ MLR & Playground, Galle, Faculty of Engineering
Description
AeroXplore: RC Plane Workshop was a hands-on technical workshop organized by the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) Student Chapter of the University of Ruhuna to introduce students to the fundamentals of remote-controlled aircraft through practical construction, assembly, testing, and flight demonstration. Unlike a conventional theory-based session, the workshop emphasized experiential learning. Participants worked in groups to construct RC aircraft within a limited time period, giving them practical exposure to the complete process of transforming basic materials and aircraft components into functional RC planes. The workshop began with participant registration, followed by an introduction to RC aircraft, aerodynamics, construction techniques, and the requirements for building a stable aircraft. Approximately 100 students participated in the workshop. Participants were divided into teams and worked collaboratively during the aircraft construction challenge. The activity required teams to manage their time effectively, divide responsibilities, communicate ideas, take accurate measurements, cut materials correctly, maintain structural alignment, and solve practical engineering problems. The practical session was conducted by Mr. Rasantha Madushanka from Rylee's Aero Models , recognized as Sri Lanka's first licensed model aircraft manufacturer. Participants received professional guidance on aircraft construction, dimensional accuracy, assembly, flight preparation, and safe operation. A key component of the workshop was the time-based RC aircraft construction challenge, during which teams were required to complete their aircraft within a specified period while maintaining construction quality. Following the construction activity, a completed aircraft was prepared for flight testing and demonstration. The flight session allowed participants to observe how construction accuracy, structural alignment, aerodynamic principles, and component placement influence aircraft stability and flight performance. The workshop created an engaging and collaborative learning environment while developing participants' technical knowledge, teamwork, communication, time-management, and practical problem-solving skills. It also served as a preparatory activity for the upcoming AeroXplore RC Plane Competition .
