IEEE Week 2026: The PCB Workshop – Designing Production-Ready PCBs with EasyEDA

October 9, 2026 · 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM @ New Computer Center, Galle, Faculty of Engineering

Description

IEEE Week 2026: The PCB Workshop – Designing Production-Ready PCBs with EasyEDA was successfully conducted on 09 October 2026 at NCC as part of IEEE Week 2026. Organized by the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES) Student Chapter, University of Ruhuna, the workshop marked the first physical technical event of the newly initiated chapter and established an important foundation for its future hands on technical activities. The workshop was designed to introduce undergraduate students to the fundamentals of Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design and provide practical exposure to the process of transforming circuit and schematic concepts into clean, manufacturable PCB designs. The resource person for the workshop was Mr. Isuru Kaushika , a graduate of Electrical and Information Engineering at the University of Ruhuna. The session was conducted as a beginner-friendly and practical introduction to PCB design, allowing participants with little or no previous PCB-design experience to engage with the concepts and workflow. The workshop focused on the progression from a circuit idea and schematic representation toward a real PCB layout suitable for practical implementation and manufacturing. Particular emphasis was placed on helping participants understand how PCB design differs from simply developing a circuit on a breadboard or within a theoretical schematic. Participants were introduced to EasyEDA as the primary software platform used during the workshop. Through practical demonstrations and hands-on learning, students gained exposure to the process of developing PCB designs using a modern electronic-design environment. The session emphasized the importance of creating clean and production-ready PCB layouts , helping participants understand that successful hardware development requires consideration not only of circuit functionality but also of physical layout, organization and manufacturability. A major strength of the workshop was its practical orientation. Participants actively engaged in PCB-design activities using EasyEDA rather than only observing a theoretical presentation. This provided students with an opportunity to connect fundamental electronics knowledge with real-world hardware-development practices. The workshop was primarily targeted at engineering undergraduates of the University of Ruhuna, with particular emphasis on the 26th and 28th batches, while remaining open to anyone interested in electronics and PCB design. Registration interest was particularly strong among these targeted student groups. More than 150 registrations were received before the workshop, demonstrating significant interest in practical PCB-design skills. The confirmed actual attendance was 102 participants , which was communicated publicly after the event as “100+ participants. The organizing team supported participants through a dedicated workshop communication group, event reminders, setup information and session-related materials. A structured publicity campaign was conducted through social-media and student communication channels before, during and after the workshop. Following the session, a feedback form was distributed to participants to gather their experiences and suggestions. Event photographs, videos and post-event publicity were also produced to document the successful completion of the workshop. As the first physical technical event of the newly initiated IEEE Industrial Electronics Society Student Chapter at the University of Ruhuna , the PCB Workshop represented an important milestone for the chapter. It provided participants with practical exposure to PCB design, introduced the use of EasyEDA for real-world hardware-development workflows and established a strong foundation for future hands-on industrial-electronics activities.
