September 6, 2026 · 4:00 AM - 9:00 AM @ SAT FF 08, Padukka, Common Area

Description

IEEE DAY 2026 was organized by the IEEE Student Branch of Sri Lanka Technological Campus as a celebration of IEEE membership, volunteering, leadership, collaboration, and professional development. The event was held on 06th September 2026 at SAT FF08 – Common Area, SLTC premises, Padukka. The programme was successfully conducted with 31 participants, 25 sub-committee members, and 16 executive committee members and guests. The programme commenced at 9:30 AM with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp in the presence of the invited guests and chief guests, marking the formal beginning of IEEE DAY 2026. This was followed by the welcome speech delivered by Methum Nanayakkara, welcoming the guests, organizers, and participants. The first keynote session, “Building Leadership and Career Growth Through IEEE Volunteering,” was conducted by Mr. Shakil Arifeen. He shared his experiences in IEEE volunteering and highlighted how volunteering can help students develop leadership, communication, teamwork, networking, and professional skills that can contribute to their future careers. Following the session, a token of appreciation was presented to Mr. Shakil Arifeen by Ravishka Rathnayaka as a gesture of gratitude. The second keynote session focused on IEEE Membership Development and was delivered through a video message by Dr. Thilina Thanthriwatta. His message helped participants understand the importance of developing IEEE membership, the benefits of becoming an active IEEE member, and the opportunities available through participation in the IEEE community. Following the keynote sessions, chapter-wise presentations were delivered by the executive committee and sub-committee members representing the different chapters and affinity groups of the IEEE Student Branch of SLTC. The presentations introduced participants to the available chapters and affinity groups, their roles within the IEEE Student Branch, projects they have contributed to, upcoming plans, organizational hierarchy, and ways for students to join and contribute to future projects. This session helped participants gain a better understanding of the IEEE community within SLTC and the different opportunities available for active involvement. A short refreshment break was then provided for the participants, after which interactive games and entertainment activities were conducted to make the celebration more enjoyable and memorable. The first activity was the Balloon Stomp Challenge, where participants attempted to protect their balloons while popping other participants’ balloons using only their feet. The activity encouraged participation, energy, and friendly competition. The second activity was the Origami Paper Aircraft Challenge. Participants were given an A4 sheet and a limited time to create their own paper aircraft. Each participant had one opportunity to throw the aircraft, with the objective of landing it completely inside the designated target area. The third activity was the Paper Skyscraper Challenge, where teams used newspapers and cello tape to construct the tallest free-standing tower within a limited time. The towers were evaluated based on height and their ability to support a heavy book for five seconds. These activities encouraged teamwork, creativity, problem-solving, and friendly interaction among participants. At the conclusion of the activities, the winners were announced and presented with gifts. The programme concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by Hiruni Imasha, who expressed sincere appreciation to all the guests, speakers, organizers, and participants for their valuable contributions and support. Special appreciation was also extended to the Organizing Committee, Media Unit, IT Department, and all participants who contributed to the successful execution of the event. Overall, IEEE DAY 2026 successfully created an engaging platform for students to understand IEEE membership, volunteering, leadership, chapters, affinity groups, and professional development opportunities while strengthening connections within the SLTC IEEE community.
