IEEE DecodeXtreme 2026 - Session 1

October 14, 2026 · 2:30 PM - 4:30 PM @ Online event

Description

The IEEE Student Branch of SLTC, in collaboration with the IEEE Computer Society Student Branch Chapter of SLTC, successfully organized Session 01 - Awareness on IEEEXtreme 20.0, the inaugural session of IEEE DecodeXtreme 2026, on 14th October 2026 via Zoom. The session was organized to introduce undergraduates to IEEEXtreme 20.0, an international programming competition organized by IEEE, and raise awareness of the opportunities it offers to develop programming skills, strengthen problem-solving abilities, and engage with the global computing community. The event commenced with an introduction by the moderators, who welcomed the attendees and outlined the purpose of the session. This was followed by the welcome speech delivered by the Project Chairperson of IEEE DecodeXtreme 2026, Mr. Sahiru Sandeepa, who highlighted the importance of familiarizing undergraduates with IEEEXtreme 20.0 and encouraging them to explore opportunities in competitive programming. The main session featured three distinguished speakers representing the IEEEXtreme community at the regional and national levels. Mr. Kavindu Ranasinghe, Region 10 Co-Lead for IEEEXtreme 20.0, delivered the first presentation, introducing participants to the competition and its place within the international IEEE community. He was followed by Mr. Hashan Maduwantha, Sri Lanka Section Lead for IEEEXtreme 20.0, who shared further insights into the competition and its relevance to university students. The final presentation was delivered by Mr. Jayod Ravihansa, Sri Lanka Section Co-Lead for IEEEXtreme 20.0, who continued the discussion and encouraged students to take an active interest in the competition. Collectively, the presentations provided participants with perspectives on IEEEXtreme 20.0 and its value as an opportunity to apply their knowledge in a competitive environment. Following each presentation, question-and-answer segments allowed participants to interact directly with the speakers, raise concerns, and seek clarification regarding the competition. These discussions created an opportunity to address uncertainties, particularly among students considering participating for the first time, and helped them gain a clearer understanding before registering. The session attracted undergraduates from various universities, including international institutions, extending its reach beyond the SLTC student community. Conducting the event via Zoom enabled participants from different geographical locations to join, creating an accessible platform for students with a shared interest in programming and technology. Towards the end of the session, virtual tokens of appreciation were presented to the three speakers in recognition of their valuable contributions. Participants were also reminded to complete their registrations for IEEEXtreme 20.0, encouraging them to put the knowledge gained during the session into practice by taking part in the competition. The event concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Praveena Jayasinghe, Project Secretary of IEEE DecodeXtreme 2026, who expressed gratitude to the speakers for sharing their knowledge and supporting the initiative. Appreciation was also extended to the participants and the individuals involved in organizing and facilitating the session. Following the closing remarks, a group screenshot was taken to commemorate the occasion. As the opening activity of IEEE DecodeXtreme 2026, Session 01 successfully established a foundation for promoting IEEEXtreme 20.0 among undergraduates. Through its presentations, interactive discussions, and participation reminders, the session introduced students to an international programming opportunity while encouraging them to explore competitive programming beyond their academic studies. The involvement of students from different universities further strengthened the session's reach and supported the project's broader objective of fostering technical awareness and student engagement.
